Come celebrate Family & Community Diversity Week with us!

The College of A&S Office of Inclusive Excellence, in partnership with Appalachian Studies and the Appalachian Center, will hold a Lunch & Learn event where students can engage in informative activities focused on family & community diversity and receive UK swag while enjoying a free catered lunch! The Lunch and Learns are open to all A&S graduates and undergraduates, but do have a maximum capacity for student participants--so be sure to RSVP using the QR code or link below.

GARC (Graduate Appalachian Research Community) will be having a social gathering this Friday at 5 pm at Pazzos Pizza. We invite everyone to come to join us for some snacks and socializing. Feel free to bring friends/significant others!

The Appalachian Center hosted an Open House at the Center, Tuesday September 25th from 11:30AM-2:00PM. The Appalachian Center is located at 624 Maxwelton Ct., across from the law school. A short welcome from Associate Director, Dr. Kathryn Engle, was given at noon and a delicious catered lunch was provided by Mimi's Southern Style Cooking. This was a free event open to UK faculty, staff and students and to the Lexington and Appalachian communities at large. Many ideas and introductions took place and we started the Fall semester off with a bang!

UK Appalachian Center's 40th Anniversary and Faculty Retirement Celebration Event

On Thursday, March 2, 2017, the UK Appalachian Center celebrated its 40th Anniversary and the retirement of three affiliated faculty members: Dwight Billings, Ron Pen, and James Hougland.  Guests gathered at the Hilary J. Boone Center on UK's Campus, and the UK Appalachian Center Director, Chris Barton, and the Appalachian Studies Director, Shaunna Scott gave talks about the Center's 40-year history and each of the faculty members' contributions throughout the years.

8th Annual Appalachian Research Community Symposium and Arts Showcase emnort0 Thu, 12/22/2016 - 10:03 am

Please, join us for the 8th Annual GARC (Graduate Appalachian Research Community) Symposium and Arts Showcase!  This event will be held on Saturday, February 18th, 2017 at the UK Law Building Courtroom. The specific daily schedule is currently being written and will be updated soon. The keynote panel this year includes a highly-esteemed group of speakers: Crystal Wilkinson, Dwight Billings, Ivy Brashear, and Robert Gipe. Undergraduate and Graduate students with research and work pertaining to Appalachia, from all Colleges and Universities, and from all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to submit poster and presentations proposals through the GARC website abstract submission form. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 1, 2017 by midnight. Students are not required to present to attend. We do ask that all presenters and non-presenters register to attend by midnight on Monday, February 6, 2017. 2016 Sustainability Forum

We are very excited to announce the 2016 Sustainability Fourm here on UK's Campus!  This event is brought to you by the Tracy Farmer Institute on Sustainability and the Environment and the UK Appalachian Center. Students may submit their posters/presentations online here: http://tfise.uky.edu/showcase by Sunday, November 20, 2016. Students will present their work on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Hillary J. Boone Center at 4:30 p.m.  Awards for the best posters/presentations will be announced at 6:30 p.m. Please, see the showcase's webpage for more information, and join us at the event!  Please, encourage other students with sustainability-focused work and research to submit and attend.

SWAP Talk with Kathryn Engle and Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth, 2016 Recipients of Eller & Billings Student Research Awards emnort0 Wed, 08/31/2016 - 11:28 am

This SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) event will feature talks by two recipients of 2016 UK Appalachian Center Eller and Billings Student Research Awards.  Kathryn Engle presents Stinking Creek Stories: Life, Agriculture, and Community in Rural Southeastern Kentucky; Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth presents "You can make a tree sing: that's the magic": Musical Instrument Makers and the Re-enchantment of Livelihood and Material in West Virginia.  Both awardees are UK Graduate Students.  This is a free event for UK Students, Faculty, and Staff!

SWAP Talk: Mental Distress and Surplus Populations in Upstate South Carolina

Please, join us at the UK Appalachian Center as we welcome Henry Bundy for a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Talk on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  This talk is entitled Mental Distress and Surplus Populations In Upstate South Carolina.  Henry was one of our 2015 recipients of the Eller & Billings Student Research Awards, and this talk is about his current research project which has been funded, in part, by the award. This is a free event for students, faculty, and staff; we welcome you!
