The two pieces, “Caochangdi” (2009) and “Markets and Malls” (2010-2011), on exhibit in the Lexington Art League’s downtown gallery, consist of sequential photographs shown as continuously looping slide shows and stop action animations. Caochangdi is an urban village located in Beijing, which is home to a number of upscale contemporary galleries and artist’s studios. Artists and galleries began moving there in the late 1990s following the artist Ai Weiwei, who was one of the first to set up his studio. The mix of traditional village life and contemporary art world provides a rich and endlessly fascinating micro-world in the environs of Beijing. “Markets and Malls” represents the contrast between the new upscale shopping malls and their traditional counterparts in Hong Kong.
