Mud And Mudstones

This course focuses on the geology and geochemistry of muds and mudstones. Lectures emphasize the generation of silt and clay, processes of transport and accumulation, muddy depositional environments, provenance techniques (inorganic geochemistry and mineralogy), organic geochemistry, and concepts/tools in basin analysis. An introduction to petroleum resource exploration in shale plays of the USA will be presented. An introduction to applied paleontology and paleoclimatology using deposits from muddy basins will also be presented.

Renewable Energy

This is a cross-disciplinary course open to all majors. Topics include Energy policy in Navarre, US and Middle East, renewable energy overview (hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaic, thermal solar, biomass, geothermal and marine). In addition, there are technical tours of important renewable energy centers in Navarre.

Technology In Literature And Film

This course will explore one of the most popular storylines in fiction and film, and one that is relevant to life throughout our history: humans and their relationships to machines and technology. Literature and cinema have long provided a perfect medium for telling stories about such relationships, for exploring how they intersect with and shape our lives, and for documenting how this has changed over time. Credit for this course can be applied to the certificate in Liberal Studies and not toward the B.A., M.A., Ph.D., or M.F.A. in English.

Contemporary American Literature

This course examines American literature written since the 1980s, introducing students to important writers, as well as key genres, movements, and intellectual trends, of the period. The class will situate literature within various social, political, cultural, and historical contexts to better understand literary imagination of the contemporary world. Credit for this course can be applied to the certificate in Liberal Studies and not toward the B.A., M.A., Ph.D., or M.F.A. in English.

Environment And Sustainability: Issues And Ideas

This course will survey some of the most important environmental problems (climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, water scarcity) and the tools needed to analyze, understand, and respond to these problems (market-based solutions, political economy, institutional economic theories, environmental ethics). Students will also explore new scientific ideas on sustainability to better understand the contemporary environmental problems the world is facing.

Environment And Sustainability Policy And Governance

This course will explore the roles of governments, markets, and civil society in the creation, adoption, and implementation of environmental and sustainability rules and norms. We will evaluate leading environmental and policy strategies, including traditional state regulation, market-based incentives and regulations created by private actors (civil society and corporations/Corporate Social Responsibility). Increasingly, the interactions between different forms of regulation figure prominently in debates about environmental and sustainability governance.

Communicating Environmental And Sustainability Studies

The course provides students an understanding of the latest scientific research in the field of environment and sustainability studies and the tools to communicate this research effectively to the public. In addition, students will learn key technical writing skills to apply knowledge in environmental and sustainability studies. For technical writing, students will develop skills for writing letters, grant proposals, reports, and presentations for specific audiences.
