In this course the student is exposed to the art of applying the tools of operations research to "real world" problems. The seminar is generally conducted by a group of faculty members from the various disciplines to which operations research is applicable.

Unconstrained optimization, Kuhn-Tucker conditions for nonlinear programs (constrained optimization). Solutions procedures: methods of feasible directions, penality methods, approximation methods, the method of generalized Lagrangians. Discrete optimal control (dynamics formulation). Solutions methods for control problems: decomposition and structured problems.

A modern treatment of stochastic processes from the measure theoretic point of view with applications to control theory; the basic notions of probability theory, independence, conditional expectations, separable stochastic processes, martingales, Markov processes, second order stochastic processes.

Advanced topics in theory of differential (ordinary or partial) and integral equations such as topological dynamics, almost periodic solutions, stochastic differential equations, integro-differential and differential-difference equations, generalized functions as solutions, non-linear partial differential equations, singular integral equations. May be repeated to a maximum of nine credits under different subtitles.

This course focuses on social entrepreneurship and how social entrepreneurs facilitate social change using media. The concepts of social entrepreneurship explored in the course include communication, innovation, performance criteria, target market, launch, management and scale.

This course provides an overview of the business of the music and recording industry, including the songwriting market, music publishing, music copyright, music licensing, unions, agents and attorneys, artist management, concert promotion, music merchandising, the record industry, record markets, recording contracts, record distribution and merchandising, studios and engineers, music in television, radio and advertising, music in films, and career development and options. Students will be introduced to industry professionals and may participate in promoting and producing a music event.
