Professors Anne-Frances Miller, Susan Odom, and Dong-Sheng Yang have received four new grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF). These highly-competitive awards will fund research projects on electron transfer in flavoproteins (Miller), high potential redox couples (Odom), high concentration electrolytes (Odom), and spectroscopy of transient organometallic complexes (Yang).

The SEC (Southeastern Conference) Faculty Travel Program will support more than 100 SEC faculty members during the 2018-2019 academic year, the league office announced Monday. Nine University of Kentucky faculty members will participate. Established in 2012 by the SEC provosts, the program is designed to provide financial assistance from the SEC office that bolsters intra-SEC collaboration.
The University of Kentucky Political Ecology Working Group invites you to participate in the Ninth Annual Dimensions of Political Ecology Conference (DOPE) to be held February 21-23, 2019, in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. DOPE has become a key international forum for students and faculty at all stages of their careers, as well as activists and grassroots community organizations, fostering critical interdisciplinary discussion of urgent topics including: rural social movements; food systems; complexity in ecological and social systems; decolonization, knowledge, and difference; science and technology studies; neoliberal natures and climate justice; and feminist political ecologies, among many others. Over 300 scholars, activists, and environmental professionals attended DOPE 2018 representing dozens of disciplines and academic institutions from across the world.
We encourage you to contribute to the intellectual vitality and continued success of the conference by organizing a session for DOPE 2019. The conference is open to any topical, theoretical, or methodological framework that brings together scholarship on the ecological dimensions of political, social, and economic research, as well as the social aspects of natural sciences.
At the 2018 North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) annual meeting, New Maps Plus student Kerry Gathers was awarded first prize in the student Dynamic Map competition. Kerry's beautifully stylized and interactive map (https://www.kgmaps.com/oil-and-bone/) highlights the rise and fall of the whaling industry of the 1800's, and includes fascinating narratives at key points. With 32 BFSU students currently studying in Lexington, that goal has become a reality.
