As a component of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, an authentic community service-learning experience unfolds over the course of a four-semester sequence. The main goal of this service-learning component is to provide students experiential opportunities to serve and learn in real world environments while developing community engagement skills and a sense of civic responsibility. Student pharmacists are expected to self- and team- direct the continued practice of professional skills and attitudes learned in their community environments.

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the principles that underlie drug design and delivery. The course is divided into three components: 1) introduction to the principles of pharmacokinetics and drug delivery; 2) introduction to the principles of medicinal chemistry (drug design); and 3) introduction to the principles of pharmacology (drug action).

Half-time to full-time work on thesis. May be repeated to a maximum of six semesters.

Residency credit for preparing and taking the qualifying examination. Students may register for one semester of this course in anticipation of completing the qualifying examination during the semester. The course is not repeatable and is not required.
