As part of the fourth-year course offerings in the College of Medicine, this secondary acting internship is designed to provide students with an advanced level of direct patient care responsibility, greater than that required during a third-year clerkship or fourth-year elective. Elective: Endocr & Metab Bowling Green

The clinical elective is a four-week rotation that allows the student to obtain in-depth exposure to Endocrinology with an expert preceptor(s) in the outpatient setting and hospital consults. Students will have experience with a variety of endocrine and metabolic problems. All students will become familiar with basic diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to a variety of endocrine disorders, with an emphasis on diabetes.

The student will experience the day-to-day activities of this specialty in the hospital and outpatient setting. Students participate in workups, evaluation and management of patients with a wide variety of liver, pancreatic and intestinal diseases. For many patients, endoscopic observation permits the close correlation of clinical manifestations with the underlying pathologic state.

The clinical elective is a four-week rotation that allows students an opportunity to evaluate and follow patients with the entire spectrum of kidney diseases in both hospital (inpatient ward, intensive care units) and clinic settings (both general nephrology and dialysis clinics). Patients followed include those with acute and chronic kidney diseases, hypertension, mineral electrolyte abnormalities, acid-base disturbances, metabolic bone diseases, receiving dialysis or post renal transplantation.
