War and Peace in Russia's Realms: A&S 100 with Karen Petrone

Later this spring, Professor Karen Petrone will begin teaching a new 7-week class as part of this year's Passport to the World Program: Reimagining Russia’s Realms. The class, A&S: 100 - War & Peace in Russia's Realms will explore the Russian and Soviet experience of World War I, the Russian Civil War, and World War II through literature, film, and history.

Writing Culture: English 205 in Costa Rica with Steve Alvarez

In May 2013, ten students will go to Costa Rica to do ethnographic writing for English 205: Advanced Composition. Steve Alvarez of WRD is taking the group to the town of Heredia for four weeks. The course meets the graduation requirement for writing, and will include service learning opportunities and plenty of cultural experiences. UK Archaeologist Helps Unearth Hatfield and McCoy Artifacts

A notorious feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky is once again making national news, but this time it is hitting a little closer to home. A discovery of artifacts associated with patriarch Randall McCoy’s home and site of an infamous 1888 attack were confirmed by Kim McBride, a historic archaeologist with the Kentucky Archaeological Survey, a joint partnership with the University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology and the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office.

16th Annual University of Kentucky Philosophy Graduate Student Conference

The College of Arts & Sciences and the Committee on Social Theory presents the 16th Annual University of Kentucky Philosophy Graduate Student Conference. The conference is also co-sponsored by The Graduate School at the University of Kentucky. While all academic papers in any area of philosophy will be considered, preference will be given to those addressing the broad themes of the intersection and relation between philosophy and community, culture, and society.  Such themes may include: What is philosophy's proper relationship to the community?  How can philosophy (or humanities/academia in general) better relate itself, or communicate its concerns, to the greater community?  What are some philosophical conceptions of community?  And so on.  All quality papers in any philosophical "style," whether "analytic," "historical,"  or "continental," will be considered.  Papers of an interdisciplinary nature are strongly encouraged.
 
Deadline for submission: February 8th, 2013.
 
Submission Guidelines: Papers and abstracts should be prepared for blind review. 
 
Please submit the following as separate documents: 
 
a) cover page with author's name, title of paper, word count of paper, institutional affiliation, and contact information (including email, phone number, and mailing address) 
b) an abstract of no more than 300 words 
c) the paper itself, double spaced, of no more than 3500 words. Word, pdf, and rtf are all acceptable formats.
