The University of Kentucky College of Arts and Scienceslast week hosted the Summer Institute in Economic Geography. With a 10-year history in supporting economic geography, the college and its Department of Geography welcomed young scholars from across the globe to Lexington. This is the first time the institute has returned to the U.S. since 2006 when it was hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Dr. Robert Olson, professor (emeritus) of Middle East History and Politics at the University of Kentucky, has been the recipient of a Festschift Kurdish Issues: Essays in Honor of Robert W. Olson on his 75th birthday. Fifteen of the top scholars from the Middle East, Europe and the United States specializing in Kurdish Studies contributed 13 essays in his honor.
The Galactic Center is one of the most active research fields in modern astronomy. The most prominent feature in the galactic center is a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Due to its proximity, it has become a unique astrophysical laboratory to study the physics behind supermassive black holes and its surroundings. In this talk I will talk about the discovery of SMBH in the center of our galaxy and outline some of the most recent developments in the Galactic center research.
The University of Kentucky Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to welcome the public to our astronomical observatory. Part of our program of public outreach is a presentation on an interesting topic in astronomy followed by a visit to the observatory. The Kentucky SkyTalk is held on the second Thursday of each month. A 45 minute program on astronomy will begin at 8:00 PM in Room 155 of the Chemistry-Physics Building. After the presentation, you are invited to view the sky through our 20-inch telescope, weather permitting.
Free parking is available on the top floor of parking structure #2, next to the observatory. With the exception of paid parking, without a valid parking permit, leaving your vehicle somewhere other than next to the observatory will result in a parking citation.
All are welcome and there is no charge. Tell your neighbors. Bring your kids.
Weather Caveat: If the university closes for a weather emergency, the SkyTalk will be postponed and the observatory will not be open.
A SkyTalk flyer in pdf format, sky maps for April, and a link to a campus map are available here: www.pa.uky.edu/observatory
Back by popular demand, the Physical Chemistry Division is offering the Mathematics of Physical Chemistry Boot Camp prior to the first week of classes. Our bootcamp provides students an introduction or refresher to a few key mathematical and numerical approaches that they will encounter in class and research. The boot camp is voluntary and open to graduate students or ambitious undergraduates interested in reviewing mathematical methods and their physical chemistry applications. The classes will meet on two Saturday mornings around the first week of classes. Each session will be be motivated by an application in physical chemistry and will review the mathematical modeling and solutions necessary to explore the problems. The format for each session will entail two lectures and hands-on tutorials. The lectures will outline the mathematics and theory behind a given problem, while the tutorials will focus on the practical tools to approach the challenge. Outcomes include working knowledge of common mathematical concepts in physical chemistry and numerical tools used to solve such problems.
Schedule and Format
Classes will be held in the new Academic Sciences Building (room TBD) on
