Advanced Japanese II

This course is primarily a course in contemporary Japanese culture, but serves as third year language course. The "texts" will consist of contemporary written materials (books, magazines, newspapers) and visual materials (tv programs, movies) and will exercise the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) studied in the first four semesters of the language.

Introduction To Japanese Culture, Pre-Modern To 1868

This course, taught in English, is designed as a general introduction to the culture of pre-modern Japan (up to the Meiji Restoration of 1868). Topics include: Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism in ancient Japan; feminine sensibilities in ancient literature; canons of medieval art; the culture of military strife; Christianity in pre-modern Japan; and encounters with the West.

Advanced Japanese IV

This course will further develop skills in sophisticated Japanese language use by exercising the four skills of language (reading, writing, listening, speaking). The course will include readings in authentic materials in a wide variety of writing styles, student writing for a variety of occasions, and development of speaking and listening fluency.
