The Science Of Social Work

Social workers must be able to evaluate knowledge and critically think about the research that informs practice. Additionally, social workers must be consumers as well as producers of evidence based research and practice. This course covers the requisite foundations of knowledge of the scientific approach, tools to identify resources, and skills to tailor interventions, implement evidence-based interventions and evidence supported common social work practice factors.

Statistics For Social Workers

Advanced social work practice requires knowledge and skills related to competent data analysis. This course is grounded in the conceptual understanding of how data informs social work practice. Topics to be covered include but are not limited to: descriptive analysis, correlations, ANOVA, and regression. Students will gain familiarity with cleaning data, interpreting results and applying critical thinking to help them make sense of statistical presentations in published manuscripts, popular media, and other sources.

Leadership skills are essential to effectively interface within a larger institutional context and community settings to maximize their own organizational goals in meeting client needs. This course encompasses the theoretical and practical foundations of leadership and management in social work settings and prepares students to use community resources to support the mission of their organization or agency.

Adv Administrative & Supervisory Prac

This course presents an advanced study and analysis of leadership roles in social work practice with emphasis upon administration and supervision in public and nonprofit settings. Management practice is examined, including employee supervision, employee evaluation, department supervision, and conflict resolution. Additional specific areas to be addressed include understanding theories of adult learning and the subsequent impact on organizations, management and supervision, effective use of personnel and fiscal resources, consultation, and professional development of staff.

Clinical Praxis Theory

Social workers must move beyond a conceptual understanding of theory to the practical application of theories that inform interventions with individuals, families, groups, and other client systems. This skills- based course prepares students to apply a variety of clinical theories to social work tasks such as: assessing and engaging clients, developing treatment plans (i.e., goals, outcomes), structuring and pacing interventions, and approaching the therapeutic relationship.

Neuroscience For Clinical Practice

There has been unprecedented growth of new knowledge on the brain and its role in trauma responses, addiction and pervasive and chronic mental illness. Understanding of the brain, and the subsequent influence on behaviors, emotions and relationships, is critical to advanced social work practice. This clinical course provides a neuroscience framework for helping social workers understand lifespan development, attachment, trauma, addictions and other mental health disorders as well as psychoactive medications.

Teaching & Learning For Social Work Educ

This course will cover theories, concepts, and frameworks that underpin best practices for teaching and learning in social work. Content will help prepare students to advance the mission of the profession through strong teaching that fosters inclusivity and integration of a critical lens to maintain awareness of oppressive systems. Course content will help prepare students to develop effective curriculum based upon CSWE's educational competencies.

Critical Issues In Social Work Education

This course focuses on current, and often controversial, issues in social work education. Students will grapple with contemporary issues facing social work educators - those ranging from broad philosophical concerns (e.g., decolonizing social work education, role of advanced standing MSW programs, etc.) to more micro level topics (e.g., power differentials in the academy, boundary issues, etc.). Through course readings, critical dialogue and questioning assumptions about how things have always been done.
