Legal Resrch & Writing Skills

Training in legal research, legal writing, legal reasoning and analysis, legal citation, and oral advocacy. In the legal research portion of the course, students receive training in how to approach basic research tasks and how to use a variety of print and electronic resources for performing research. In the legal writing portion of the course, problem-based writing assignments are used to train students in effective legal writing, legal reasoning and analysis, and legal citation, and to introduce students to oral advocacy.

Criminal Procedure I

This course will cover search and seizure, the privilege against self-incrimination, confessions and identification procedures -- in general, the Constitutional cases arising out of the conflict between police practices and the Bill of Rights.

Criminal Trial Process

This course will cover in depth the criminal trial process from the initial court appearance: grand jury proceedings, pretrial motions, discovery, trial, pleas, sentencing, appeals, double jeopardy and habeas corpus. Students who have taken LAW 813 Criminal Procedure II may not take this course.
