Universal Design Practicum

This course provides experiential learning in universal design principles utilized in the built and learning environments. You will be introduced to a range of spatial thinking skills as they relate to accessibility and universal design. You will become familiar with accessibility evaluation methods including mapping and translate these skills into course fieldwork, with a focus on experiences on campus. This course illustrates the application of universal design across a variety of disciplines.

Universal Design Practicum II

This course provides advanced experiential learning in universal design principles utilized in the built and learning environments. This course illustrates the application of universal design across a variety of disciplines. Students, with the assistance of the Director of the Certificate in Universal Design, will identify and secure a practicum setting.

Interdisciplinary Supports

This course will build on the disciplinary clinical competence of participating students and enhance their knowledge and skills related to specific issues regarding the needs of persons with developmental disabilities and other special health care needs. Topics covered include: Epidemiology, Prevention of Developmental Disabilities, Micro Environment, Early Childhood, School Age and Adult Issues, Cultural Diversity, the Rural and Underserved Population, Politics, Law and Health Care Reform Issues and Advocacy. Lecture, three hours per week.

The course will include practical experiences in interdisciplinary assessments and/or activities, as well as a long-term individualized student practicum. The practicum seminars will focus upon problem-solving strategies in providing high quality supports to persons with developmental disabilities and their families. Lecture: one hour every two weeks; laboratory: eight hours per week.
