Layla Unseld
Neuroscience
Philosophy

Hi everyone! My name is Layla Unseld, and I am a junior majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Philosophy and Italian! I was born and raised in Bardstown, KY, but spent a lot of my time growing up in Loretto, KY too! My hopes are to continue past my undergraduate years and attend medical school, where I will continue my study of neuroscience as well as oncology and further obtain my Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Outside of my academics, I am also an ambassador for Transformative Learning here at UK! In addition to this, I was recently accepted into the Medical Observership Program, so I will be spending some of my summer shadowing doctors here in Lexington! In my spare time, I LOVE to garden, crochet, read, bake, and hang out with friends and family! In addition to these hobbies, I enjoy learning new instruments and making music (I learned guitar most recently) and volunteering. In fact, I spend a lot of my free time volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House and helping with local events in my hometown such as our annual Cancer Survivor Picnic and Feed America.

One thing that fueled my love for Neuroscience was the background I had in dealing with neurological issues. My younger sister has dealt with epilepsy for her entire life, and in my growing up with her, I developed a curiosity for the workings of the brain. After choosing to come to UK, and deciding on my pursuit of this field, my need for knowledge only grew even more! The brain is such an uncharted territory that we truly know nothing about, and that concept fascinates me to no end!

I am so excited to have this opportunity to meet new people and experience new things! If you ever need anything, I am always around and would love to get to know you!
