LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 2, 2023) — The University of Kentucky Martin Luther King (MLK) CenterMartin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and EnvironmentLewis Honors CollegeCollege of Arts and Sciences, and Department of Hispanic Studies are hosting “Cafecito con Chavez: An Evening with Eduardo Chavez.”

The event will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5., in the Gatton Student Center’s Harris Ballroom.

Chavez, the grandson of activist Cesar Chavez, is notable for his work as a filmmaker and speaker. The release of his feature documentary, “Hailing Cesar,” in 2018 gave audiences a look into Cesar Chavez's political and activist background. Eduardo Chavez also is the co-founder of Latindia Studios and is the host of the podcast “We Are Latinx."

Chavez will share insights into his journey of creating a meaningful legacy through activism, directing and media platforms.

“This is a great opportunity for the Latinx and Hispanic community of UK and Lexington to have Eduardo Chavez come to UK,” said Carlos Verea Zacaria , president of the Latino Student Union. “It allows us to explore what Chavez has done and how his grandson has continued his work and improved on and how he himself has deviated from the negative aspects of his grandfather’s belief.”

Moderated by Sofía Mena Molina,  student and student teaching assistant within the Department of Hispanic Studies, the event will detail Cesar Chavez’s legacy and strenuous efforts to advance education on the Latinx experience.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
