What's New in Science - Tim Gorringe Spring 2013 Series, University of Kentucky
Four UK students, Lodz Pierre, Cherley Fleury, Tehilla Adams, and Olimpia Ferguson; had the opportunity to share some Caribbean culture with students and parents at Meadowthorpe Elementary for a Heritage Night that the school was hosting. Dr. Jacqueline Couti, Assistant Professor of French in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures as well as the advisor to the Caribbean Student Assocation, choreographed the dance.
Drew Ritzel is just one of hundreds of UK students who have participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip — either a weekend excursion or a weeklong adventure — to volunteer.
Ritzel, a junior biology major from Dayton, Ohio, went on his first ASB trip as a freshman and since that experience, he’s been hooked.

And that certainly was the case when Lexington Mayor Jim Gray recently stopped by one of the monthly coffee chats to discuss the city that the students now call home, and their interaction within that community.

Owsley County is the first site for Homegrown Kentucky, a farm-to-school project developed by University of Kentucky students Ben Smith, Adam Meredith, Luke McAnally, Patrick Johnson and Ben Norton. Ideally, this model will be applied to other schools across Kentucky, making Kentucky schools more self-sufficient while offering students and community members an opportunity to learn and practice agricultural skills.
Through a National Science Foundation program called Research Experiences for Undergraduates, 10 students from colleges across the country spent 10 weeks studying suburban ecology and invasive species at or nearby UK's Ecological Research Facility.
