Message from the Chair

Greetings to former undergraduates, graduate students, and other alumni! I hope you will enjoy this Political Science Department newsletter. As I enter the fifth year of a six-year stint as chair, I will be leading a department that has experienced a lot of change since most of you were students here. Our 16 tenured and tenure-track faculty do include some seasoned professors, like Horace Bartilow, Mark Peffley, Ellen Riggle, Stephen Voss, and Rick Waterman.

Arts & Sciences Dean Mark Lawrence Kornbluh speaks at the Topping Off Ceremony for the new Academic Science Building. The ceremony signifies the end of the structural phase and the beginning of the remaining phases of the construction process. The Academic Science Building is scheduled to open Fall 2016.

Part 1 of 4: Review of Global Seismicity Predicting earthquakes has been a goal of seismology for centuries. In spite of increasing understanding of how faults work and earthquakes are produced, predicting when a damaging earthquake will occur is still very challenging. The fundamental information for predicting earthquakes is the earthquake record of when and where earthquakes occur. This section summarizes the distribution of seismicity on earth.

What's New in Science - Computing molecular properties

What's New in Science Anne-Frances Miller

Part 4 of 4: The modeling software gives us a look at CO2, polarity and means of understanding real-world properties such as ability to solvate salts or trap heat. We learn there is important interplay between real measurements in the lab and the software calculations. Measurements let us test the validity of calculations on known materials, suggesting how well the calculations can do in predicting new, but similar, molecules. This technique allows us to identify the most promising new molecular designs for actual creation in the lab.

New Mappings Speaker Series: Daniel Sui

Dan Sui is Professor and Chair of Geography at The Ohio State University. His current research focuses on volunteered geographic information and the use of social media as a new data source for geographic research as well as the legal and ethical issues of using geospatial technologies in society. The New Mappings Collaboratory at the University of Kentucky hosted Professor Sui, kicking off an effort to build partnerships around new spatial media education and research.
