UK Delegation Teaches and Collaborates With Shanghai University

Last week, 15 UK faculty taught students at Shanghai University in China through the UK Confucius Institute’s “UK Faculty China Short-Term Teaching Program.”

To China and Back: Rita Basuray, Julia Johnson, and Ernest Yanarella

During the summer of 2013, a delegation of University of Kentucky faculty had the opportunity to travel and teach abroad in China. Organized by the Confucius Institute, the trip placed 29 faculty members at the bustling Shanghai University. There, each professor was placed with a host department within the university.

Among those who made their way east were College of Arts and Sciences members Ernest Yanarella, chair of the Department of Political Science; visiting lecturer Dr. Rita Basuray; and Associate Professor Julia Johnson of the English department.

Like everyone who went on the trip, these three were presented with experiences both unique and profound that will certainly impact their teaching back home at UK.

In this podcast, we explore the trip through their eyes and talk about some of the moments that made the trip something they will never forget.

The Creative Thought Process: Katie Cross and Kendra Sanders

The student co-presidents of the Graphite Creative Writing Association were brought together by the group’s faculty advisor, English associate professor Julia Johnson. The young student organization will work to do for the other creative writers on the University of Kentucky’s campus what the club has already done for them—create a stronger sense of fellowship and community.

Disturbing The Peace With Poetry: Julia Johnson

There is word on the page and then there is word given breath. This past April, students and faculty from the University of Kentucky brought words to life thanks to a 12-hour open air poetry reading. The event, organized by English professor and published author Julia Johnson, was held outside of the Student Center welcoming anyone and everyone to come read their favorite poems aloud. The reading itself was held in celebration of National Poetry Month and to raise awareness of UK’s growing creative writing community.

In this podcast, we sit down with Professor Julia Johnson who talks about her motivations behind holding the reading and how she hopes the event will help build an even stronger sense of community between the university's creative writers and faculty. Also joining are English department graduate students and editors at UK's literary journal Limestone, Jenna Goldsmith and Robin Rahija who give their thoughts on the poetry reading, Limestone, and the impact of hearing a few beautiful words each day.

Finally, we hear a few of those beautiful words from a UK student and from WRD professor Steven Alvarez who reads a poem of his own.
