APP 399-001: Participatory Action Research in Appalachia. Controlled enrollment. A learning contract is required for this course. Contact instructor for enrollment information. :" Borrowing from the theme for the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference, this partial term practicum course will be centered on the theme "Resilience in Appalachia: From Surviving to Thriving." During this course students will engage with a variety of readings and activities relating to resilience in the region with a specific focus on eastern Kentucky. After the devastating floods that swept through eastern Kentucky in summer 2022, students will learn how organizations and communities are coming together, building back, and planning for the future. The course will focus on several themes including the environment, health, housing, building diverse communities, and just transition initiatives. This course will provide experiential and service learning opportunities for students. Students will participate in a creek cleanup and research project on Stinking Creek on March 11th. The week of spring break, students will learn about and visit different organizations including Appalshop in Whitesburg, Robinson Forest in Clayhole, and the Housing Development Alliance in Hazard. Students will also attend the Appalachian Studies Association Conference to be held March 16-19 in Athens, Ohio."
