Note:
The documented history of an object, or its provenance, often includes illicit acts, such as looting, theft, the desecration of sacred sites, the destruction of the archaeological record, embezzlement, and fraud. Art historians who investigate the provenance of an artwork thus need to use multiple research techniques, and to address complex ethical issues. Additional theoretical concerns arise when art historians employ a "social biography of things" - particularly the traces of interactions embedded in the object itself - to address the shifting values assigned to an artwork as it passes through time and crosses cultural divides.
