Note:
This course looks at the relationship between artistic production and the concept of artificial life. Considering works ranging from the automata of ancient Greece to present-day generative artificial intelligence, students will investigate the role art in forming understandings of artificial life forms, both realized and imagined. Cyborgs, robots, automata, chimeras, spirits, divinities, clones, AI, avatars, and other forms of sentience that challenge our understanding of consciousness and the moral status of life will be discussed.
