This course will allow students to develop basic biological, social, clinical, and theoretical understandings of acquired cognitive- communication disorders. Normal and non-normal social-cognitive development and aging will introduce the content. This course will cover the role of the speech-language pathologist in the assessment and treatment of patient populations with cognitive-communication disorders while reviewing the neuroanatomy of cognition and communication processes. Also included will be traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere brain injury, and progressive neurological diseases resulting in dementia. Assessment and treatment techniques for higher-level linguistic deficits associated with non-dominant hemisphere and pragmatic communication disorders will also be addressed.
