Note:
This course will examine and apply the notion of "enregisterment," a concept from linguistic anthropology that has taken the sociolinguistic world by storm. It looks at styles (or registers) that are associated with social groups and their ways of behaving, including, of course, the linguistic signals they send that associate them with those groups and with that enregistered way of speaking. Enregisterment refers as well to those linguistic features that index that group and style and therefore make up its language content. We will read and discuss basic works in the area and each participant will select their own enregistered variety and select an approach within this framework and apply it to some part of its linguistic content.
