Note:
This course introduces the major themes, artists, and artworks of nineteenth century Europe, with an emphasis on French painting from the end of the Enlightenment to the beginning of the 20th century. The 19th century is a century of profound political, industrial, and cultural transformation; one in which traditional forms of media (painting and sculpture) are replaced by new forms (primarily photography and film). In this course, we will examine the major artistic movements of the century (Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism) the artists understood as integral to each movement, and how these artists questioned and changed the rules of representation, forever redefining the definition of art itself.
