This course is designed to introduce current concepts in pediatric dentistry. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of pediatric dentistry, including: 1) space management of the developing dentition, 2) anomalies of the developing dentition and orofacial structures, including cleft lip and palate, 3) restorative dentistry for the pediatric patient, 4) behavior management and guidance using nitrous oxide sedation, 5) pulpal therapy for the primary dentition and permanent dentition, 6) traumatic injuries for primary and permanent dentition, 7) oral surgery and local anesthesia for the pediatric patient, 8) care for the medically compromised child, including diabetes and asthma, 9) care for special needs, 10) recognizing the signs of child abuse and 11) acknowledging gingivitis and periodontal disease in the child and adolescent patient.
