Description
If you are looking for a position that impacts the well-being of Kentucky’s citizens and communities every day, then the Division of Waste Management’s Field Office Branch has just the job for you. 
 
The Branch’s mission is to identify and abate imminent threats to human health and the environment through inspections, technical assistance and education and is looking for an Environmental Scientist I to join their team and fill a full time, permanent position. 
 
The Florence Regional Office seeks a motivated candidate who wants to make an immediate, direct impact on their community; one who enjoys working outdoors and seeks challenges; one who is capable of and comfortable with dealing directly with the public. 
 
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conducts entry level environmental scientific investigations of sites regulated by DWM to determine compliance with environmental laws and regulation.
  • Evaluates notifications and complaints of permitted and un-permitted activities, responds to inquiries.
  • Receives formal and informal training and attends DWM activities, completes required administrative reports and maintains assigned equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance and information concerning DWM laws and regulations to facilities and others.
  • Participates in enforcement activities; case preparation, attends enforcement conferences, and testifies as a witness. Collects scientific samples to document violations.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
 
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
 
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
 
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. 
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
 
Working Condition
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in this position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snake and insect bites, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, and rusty metal in streams. Electrocution from electro-fishing equipment is possible.
 
Probationary Period
