Introduction To Laboratory Methodologies

Students in the Employer-Sponsored MLS Undergraduate Certificate will be introduced to basic clinical laboratory principles and techniques, and learn and practice the skills necessary for obtaining a blood specimen by venipuncture and dermal puncture. The course covers: 1) laboratory safety; 2) pipetting methods; 3) microscopy for light, phase, polarized; 4) sterilization rationale and procedures; 5) laboratory math calculations and statistics, 6) the theory and practice of blood collection related to routine and special specimen collection for clinical laboratory testing. Particular emphasis is placed on quality assurance and safe practice issues associated with venipuncture and skin puncture. Students will also complete a two day clinical rotation (8 hours per day; total of 16 hours) focused on accessioning and processing of patient specimens at an affiliated clinical laboratory.
