Graduate-Level ESL Course Descriptions
| Course | Course Description |
| ESL 095: Academic Writing for International Graduate Students | Prepares international graduate students for academic writing in U.S. universities. The course emphasizes U.S. academic writing conventions, the writing process (drafting, revising, editing, proofreading), and academic honesty, including plagiarism avoidance and source evaluation and citation. Students apply discipline-specific writing strategies through assignments such as annotated bibliographies and proposal or problem–solution papers while developing grammatical accuracy, academic vocabulary, and independent revision skills. |
| ESL 093: Academic Speaking/Listening for International Graduate Students | Develops oral and aural communication skills for international graduate students in a practical, supportive environment. The course focuses on American English pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation; listening strategies; and academic speaking skills. Students build fluency and confidence through presentations, group and roundtable discussions, and individualized instruction designed to improve comprehensibility and effective nonverbal communication. |
| ESL 090: English for International Teaching Assistants | Designed for non-native English-speaking graduate teaching assistants who are placed into or recommended for the course through the ITA Language Screening. The course focuses on communication, pronunciation, listening and speaking skills, presentation techniques, classroom interaction, and pedagogical communication. Students are reassessed at the end of the semester to determine approved teaching assistant duties. |
