Prereq: Good standing either as an advanced (junior or senior) undergraduate or as a graduate student in a) Agricultural Economics, Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering, Chemical & Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Forestry & Natural Resources, Horticulture, Plant & Soil Sciences; or b) another discipline related to the food, energy and water nexus such as Food Science, Civil Engineering, Earth & Environmental Science, Environmental & Sustainability Studies, etc. with consent of the instructor. A basic understanding of math, biological and physical sciences is required. Basic knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing is also required.

Among the issues facing humankind, providing adequate amounts of food to a growing population, developing CO2-neutral sustainable sources of energy, and managing water resources represent three key challenges. This course will provide the background for understanding these issues, especially as applied to the Appalachian region of the US.
