We will explore the history and landscape of public and philanthropic grants in the United States; the purposes of grants; key principles in grant planning, writing, and management; and focus on strategies to align grant-seeking with the mission of the organization. We will emphasize issues of evaluation and performance management that extend well beyond the grant writing process, along with strategic considerations about meeting public policy, organizational, or research goals through grant-making and grant-seeking. In this writing-intensive course, students will be expected to develop, refine, and provide feedback on a variety of writing products.
