This 12-month course is designed to provide the student with an advanced understanding of and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic complex orofacial pain disorders and sleep disordered breathing disorders. Upon completion of the course, the student should be proficient in the assessment, treatment planning and treatment execution for patients with chronic complex orofacial pain disorders and sleep disordered breathing disorders. Emphasis will be placed upon taking a thorough history and complete clinical examination of the orofacial pain patient and provide clinical procedures, prescribing medications, writing referral orders, and ordering appropriate imaging and laboratory procedures. The student should be able to use information resources (i.e., books, journal articles) to thoroughly understand the various orofacial pain disorders, sleep disordered breathing and comorbid disorders and diseases encountered during the clinic hours. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate with other appropriate healthcare providers that may assist in providing the best care for the patient. The student will be able to describe the orofacial pain dentist's role in the care of the complex orofacial pain patient.
