This hybrid course will provide students with an immersive experience in documenting, interpreting, communicating and visualizing cultural heritage - including the built environment (buildings, districts, cultural landscapes) and intangible culture (stories, music, oral history, etc.). The course is divided into eight modules, roughly corresponding to eight weeks in a face-to-face course. The modules are further divided into three units. Unit One and Three will be taught entirely online through the University of Kentucky's Canvas system. Unit Two consists of a six-day intensive face-to-face field school in Lexington, KY. All of the course units are designed to teach students how to "read" the historic built environment within its historical, material, political, social, and cultural contexts. Students will be introduced to traditional field-methods and technology, as well as emerging interdisciplinary methods of enquiry that embrace the knowledge of people, communities and cultures that have been historically marginalized.
