This course introduces graduate students to the field of chemical dependency and substance abuse, their assessment and treatment with an emphasis on counseling settings and practice. In depth issues surrounding addiction, etiology, diagnosis and treatment will be explored. Our focus will be on theories of addiction, physiological, and psychology of addiction, and treatment approaches with a significant emphasis on treatment issues related to gender and racial diversity. This course is designed to address the American Psychological Association accreditation requirement regarding advanced integrative knowledge of basic discipline-specific areas. Material in this class will focus on biological aspects of behavior and social aspects of behavior.
