Lecture course exploring the rediscovered remains of the first-century Roman city buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE.  The course surveys the spectrum of issues in the image-rich Roman visual culture, including city planning and infrastructure (walls and gates, roads, building blocks, water fountains, baths and aqueducts); the Forum; patronage of public buildings; Temples (Venus, Isis, Apollo, Capitolium); shops, workshops, townhouses, villas, gardens; tombs;  Roman wall painting and sculpture in public spaces, town houses and villas.  You will have an opportunity to explore your own choice of some aspect of the new discoveries and new interpretations of old finds a bit more deeply.

Study of the arts and visual cultures of the Ancient World. According to subtitles, focus may be on selected periods or media of artistic and visual production, in the context of political, social, and cultural developments, from the Bronze Age through the Roman Empire under Constantine. May be repeated under a different subtitle to a maximum of six credits. Prereq: A-H 105 recommended. Same as CLA 314.
