Resource Infused Sessions in Education (RISE)

What is RISE?

RISE is a brand new mentorship opportunity for a specific group of students in the College of Arts and Sciences.  It is available to students who are not involved in an LLP on campus, who are not in the Honors program, and who do not qualify for the Academic Preparation Program.  Students will be matched with both faculty mentor and staff mentors that they will meet with throughout the semester.  Meetings will focus on the transition from high school to college and some of the common issues that can arise for students, including time management and learning style assessments.  This is a non-credit bearing opportunity, but our expectation is that students who participate will have a smoother adjustment to college life and be more connected with students, faculty, and staff during their first semester at UK.

Benefits of Participation

Students participating in RISE will:

  • Make new friends and get connected with other A&S students
  • Build meaningful relationships with A&S faculty and staff mentors
  • Learn to recognize and utilize appropriate campus resources
  • Receive an academic planner and learning how to effectively use it
  • Strengthen time management skills
  • Learn to utilize appropriate study skills for their learning style

Calendar of Events

RISE will consist of four meetings and a capstone ceremony over the course of the fall semester.  Friday afternoons from 4 – 6:00pm have been chosen to minimize scheduling conflicts.  Additionally, meeting dates have been selected to coincide with home football game weekends to lessen interference with students planning to return home for the weekend.  Our goal is that participation will not interfere with coursework or peak social times.  Because RISE meetings will take place in the late afternoon, meals will be served at each gathering.
