The earth's surface is characterized by complex interactions among its abiotic and biotic components. Understanding of the causal relationships among these components is challenging, as they operate over a wide range of spatiotemporal scales and require knowledge from different academic disciplines. The Earth Surface Systems program at the University of Kentucky brings together faculty and students interested in questions about pattern and process in the earth's critical zone. Its function is to serve as the center for integrative theoretical and applied research spanning hydrological, geologic, geomorphic, biological, and atmospheric systems.
