Community 101

A&S 100-021 This course has a late start date of October 8th. Students may add this course until October 14th. The course presents a broad overview and brief introduction to Lexington as an American city. It will help you better understand the place of the University in Lexington and the contributions you can make to urban life in some of its many facets. Some field trips/visits will be completed independently- some may occur on the weekend and in the daytime/evening hours.

LEARN ABOUT LEXINGTON BY GETTING OUT THERE AND SEEING IT FOR YOURSELF.

Lexington has a long and rich history that has shaped the great city we live in today. We want you to know about your city: what is great and what can still be improved. The best way to do this is to leave the classroom and get out to explore and discover. We will do that many times throughout the semester. When we can’t get out, we will bring the community to you. At the end of this class you will have a deeper understanding of Lexington’s many successes, as well as its challenges.

TOPICS COVERED:
CITY & CAMPUS HISTORY, LOCAL FIRST BUSINESSES, CITY GOVERNANCE, LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS, INVISIBLE POPULATIONS, AND ART & ACTIVISM
