Department of Biology 

The Department of Biology at the University of Kentucky seeks two (2) tenure-track Assistant Professors interested in molecular bases of evolution and/or molecular approaches to environmental response.  Other areas of modern biological thought will be considered.  We are particularly interested in programs that integrate empirical approaches with theoretical, statistical, or computational methods.  Model systems for research are open, ranging from microbes to plants and animals, as are levels of biological organization studied, ranging from molecular genetics and epigenetics of cells to genomics of populations.  Applicants must have an earned doctorate and have completed postdoctoral training, and previous research by the successful applicants must be published in premier scientific journals.  Evidence of an ability to obtain extramural grant support is preferred.  Responsibilities for the successful candidate include establishment of an independent research program that is supported by awards from extramural agencies and contribution to teaching mission of the Biology Department.  For more details on the department and the university, visit our website (http://biology.uky.edu) or contact Dr. Vincent Cassone, Chair, Department of Biology, vincent.cassone@uky.edu or (859) 257-6766.

Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry expects to make two (2) appointments at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Biological Chemistry with a starting date of August 2010. Applications at the Associate or Full Professor level may be considered in exceptional cases. We are seeking candidates who will develop a strong, nationally and internationally recognized interdisciplinary research program that combines Biological Chemistry with other areas of research. Preference will be given to candidates with a research emphasis on biofuels/renewable energy, synthetic organic or inorganic chemistry related to biological phenomena, environmental chemistry or other areas that complement existing departmental strengths. Successful candidates should be dedicated to excellence in teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

These positions were created through the Research Challenge Trust Fund (“Bucks for Brains”), an outcome of the 1997 Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act. The RCTF program provides a strategic investment in the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville and Kentucky’s six regional universities. The RCTF program is administered by the Council on Postsecondary Education and is designed to advance the economic success of Kentucky and its citizens through education and research. RCTF funds provide Kentucky’s universities support for ongoing efforts to attract and retain faculty and researchers.

Department of Hispanic Studies 

The Department of Hispanic Studies invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor beginning August 2010, with a specialization in Early Modern (Golden Age) Spanish Studies. A transatlantic component focused on the Latin American Colonial period is desirable. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research, teach courses, and mentor students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels across the field of Hispanic Studies.  Our department has an active doctoral program with a strong interdisciplinary component; candidates should be prepared to discuss how the theoretical and multi-disciplinary frameworks of their own research might inform their guidance of graduate students. Candidates should have a solid record of scholarship and teaching as appropriate to rank, as well as a coherent research agenda. Teaching load: 2 courses per semester. A Ph.D. is required by time of appointment. Department of Mathematics

Applications are invited for one full time faculty positions beginning in Fall 2010, at the tenure-track (Assistant Professor) level. Appointees will be expected to pursue a vigorous research program and to teach graduate as well as undergraduate students. While outstanding applicants from all mathematical research areas will be considered, preference will be given to those with research interests in the following areas of research:  (A) Topology and Geometry; (B) Analysis and Partial Differential Equations. Applicants at higher levels will be considered in exceptional cases.

Applicants should have completed the Ph.D. degree by the time the appointment begins and are expected to present evidence of excellence in research and teaching. Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Kentucky invites applications for the position of assistant professor of French with a specialization in Francophone studies. This appointment will begin August 2010. A PhD, evidence of an active research program, and successful teaching experience are required. Responsibilities include teaching four courses per year, pursuing an active research program, and engaging in service to the University and the community. Department of Philosophy

 Assistant Professor, tenure-track, beginning Fall semester, 2010. 4 courses/year (2/semester), undergraduate and graduate. Some thesis supervision. Usual non-teaching duties. AOS: Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, or Philosophy of Language; AOC: Logic. Teaching duties will include a course on symbolic logic/metalogic that is required of students in the Ph.D. program. Ph.D. required at time of appointment. Department of Statistics

Applications are invited for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2010. This position will build upon the Department’s successful collaborations with the Biological Sciences. It is a nine month appointment and is fully funded. Faculty may seek summer employment through grants and contracts or summer school for amounts up to 3/9 of the academic year salary. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally competitive research program involving collaboration with the Biological Sciences. The normal teaching load for research active Assistant professors is three courses per academic year. Faculty having significant grant support may request a reduced teaching load. Course releases are also negotiable as part of a start-up package.The Department of Statistics has 18 faculty members and offers both the M.S. and Ph.D. in Statistics. Both masters and doctoral students can choose tracks in Biostatistics. Currently, 45 students are actively pursuing degrees.
