Two IS Majors Honored with Scholarships from Rotary Club
Senior Joshua England and junior Whitney Turientine were both honored with scholarships by the Rotary Club of Lexington:
Whitney Turientine - Junior from Indianapolis, Ind.
Majors: International Studies (focusing on Development and Latin America), Spanish, minor in Political Science
Career plans: I plan on applying and being accepted into a graduate program, either abroad or in the U.S., that allows me to really delve into the topic of Development Studies as it pertains to women. My goal, after receiving training in international development, is to work for a non-profit that is aimed at empowering women through financial, health, and educational resources. Somehow I hope to impact women around the world in order to increase awareness on women's rights, promote economic empowerment, and to provide assistance and training for those living in impoverished situations.
Joshua England - Senior from Berea
Majors: International Studies (focus on Global Environment and Europe), minor in French and Sustainable Agriculture
Career plans: Helping people is my lifework. My experience so far in college have taught me that you have to give much of yourself in order to improve the quality of life for those around you. I hope after college to continue growing in my understanding of what it means to serve and give to others. Specifically, I would like to use my current abilities and gain much experience through a term in the Peace Corp. I am willing to help people wherever there is a need. After Peace Corp I plan on returning to the university and obtaining a Masters Degree in Public Policy and going on to work for a Ph.D. in Human Services or Geography. All of this to say my dream job is to work for the Red Cross (or similar agency) as a regional director.
