Linguistics Program Well Represented at International Conference
Six members of the University of Kentucky’s Linguistics Program participated at the 1st International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation held March 12-14 at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The University of Kentucky was one of the best-represented universities at this important international conference.
Rusty Barrett (English) presented a paper entitled “The relationship between language teaching and Mayan language conservation in Guatemala”;
Andrew Hippisley (English) and Gregory Stump (English) presented a paper coauthored with Raphael Finkel (Computer Science) entitled “Computing in the field: language modeling for elicitation and documentation of Shughni”;
Graduate student Amanda Barie (English) presented a paper entitled “Ya waft 'She knits': A Graduate Student's Role in Shughni Language Collaboration”;
Haralambos Symeonidis (Hispanic Studies) presented a poster entitled “Atlas Lingüístico Guaraní-Románico: Documenting endangered varieties of Guaraní”;
Amanda Barie, Andrew Hippisley, visiting scholar Shahlo Nekushoeva, and Gregory Stump presented a poster entitled “A collaborative project for the documentation of the Shughni language”, in whose preparation Darya Bukhtoyarova, Raphael Finkel, Mark Lauersdorf (Modern & Classical Languages) and Jeanmarie Rouhier-Willoughby (Modern & Classical Languages) also participated.
