Innovation and Growth 

• New Interdisciplinary Cluster Hires: to achieve understanding and growth in newly identified problems and fields of inquiry, such as Children at Risk (Psychology & Sociology); the Center for Advanced Materials (Physics, Chemistry, & Biology); the Center for Bio‐Nanotechnology (Chemistry & Biology); & Migration.
• Collaborations across colleges: including the Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior (with faculty from faculty from Anthropology, Biology, Entomology, Forestry, Philosophy, Physiology, Psychology, and Statistics) and the Tracy Farmer Center for the Environment.
• Plans to Transform Several Programs: into new departments, such as Gender and Women’s Studies, Linguistics, and African American Studies.
• Committee in Social Theory: designed to build bridges between the humanities and the social sciences, with some fifty affiliated faculty from diverse disciplines and colleges across the University.
• New Parental Leave Policy: that allows a partial leave of absence with modified duties, for either parent.
• New Sabbatical Leave Policy: persons taking a full‐year sabbatical can now take advantage of a 2/3 instead of 1/2 salary for the 12 months.
• Increased Research Pool: of funding available for faculty research in the college.
• Professional Undergraduate Advisors: in the college and assigned to each department, helping with retention and graduation rates.
• A Strong Commitment to Diversity throughout the college.

An Eye to the Future

• Increased Development Staff: to assist the Dean in developing Alumni relations & funding raising, an increasing focus of the position
• The Research Challenge Trust Fund is available to procure new money for endowed positions in the college

Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences - The University of Kentucky seeks an innovative and forward‐looking individual for Dean of its College of Arts and Sciences, with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2009. The Dean is the College's chief executive and academic leader and reports to the Provost. The Dean is expected to provide academic and administrative leadership for teaching, research, and engagement activities; budgetary and fiscal management; and development and alumni programs. The Dean represents the College within the University, and to its varied external constituencies.

The University of Kentucky is the state's flagship public land grant university, and has embarked on an ambitious trajectory for future growth. The Kentucky General Assembly has mandated that the University attain a stature as one of the Top Twenty Public Research Universities in the United States by 2020, and is allocating substantial fiscal resources to support the growth of endowments that support chairs, professorships, graduate fellowships, research program development, and research facilities. The new Dean must be prepared to initiate strategies to respond to these opportunities and challenges with fresh ideas as well as with established approaches.

The successful candidate will be expected to have demonstrated: proven leadership and administrative acumen; a commitment to excellence in research and in graduate and undergraduate education; an appreciation of the diverse missions of the College's natural and mathematical sciences, social sciences, and humanities disciplines and its multidisciplinary and international studies and programs; a commitment to vigorous intellectual life, affirmative action and diversity in higher education; budgetary experience in an academic setting; and a commitment to active fundraising. The Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky will have an earned doctorate, an active research program, and qualifications commensurate with tenure at the rank of professor in one of the disciplines within the College.
