Carvalho Honor Creates Oppportunities

Recognition for a campus leader in international education will create an infusion of new ideas and resources for the University of Kentucky’s internationalization initiatives, including education abroad, recruitment of international students, opportunities for global funding and related areas. Susan Carvalho, UK associate provost for international programs, has been named a Presidential Fellow by the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA).

"The process for selecting AIEA Presidential Fellows is a peer-reviewed process through a selection committee which carefully reviews and ranks all the applications. This year's selection process was quite competitive given the high quality of applicants, and we are delighted that Dr. Susan Carvalho was selected," said Pia Wood, president of AIEA and associate provost for international education at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville.

”UK is on a path to becoming more internationalized in order to prepare its students to be competitive in the global economy.  Dr. Carvalho’s Fellowship is another step in this journey,” said UK Provost Kumble R. Subbaswamy.

AIEA Presidential Fellows receive funding to enable them to work with a senior colleague at a university of similar size and purpose, exchanging experiences and ideas. Fellows participate in a structured week-long visit on the campus of the senior colleague, during which they can expand their knowledge of best practices in international education Additionally, the senior colleague will visit the University of Kentucky in order to advise faculty and staff about the implementation of the recently completed Strategic Plan for Internationalization.  As members of a national network of fellows, participants gain resources they can call upon throughout their careers for the betterment of their institutions.

“I am delighted that this program creates yet another opportunity for the University of Kentucky to talk with other leading universities, about national and global issues that relate to our mission of engaged teaching and research," said Carvalho.

"I think we will benefit from the external perspectives that the Presidential Fellows program makes available to us, and I hope that our efforts can also serve as a model to other universities.”
