Abby Hollander Receives Outstanding Advisor Award
Abby Hollander and Larry Grabau were both honored as the recipients of the 2009 Ken Freedman Outstanding Advisor Award. Hollander and Grabau have been described by their students and colleagues as advisors who "go beyond expectation" and "give renewed energy" to help students reach their goals.
"I am honored and humbled by this award and take great encouragement from this," Hollander said. Hollander is undergraduate advisor for Spanish and International Studies in the UK College of Arts and Sciences and received the award for outstanding professional advisor. "Hollander is an ideal liaison between students, faculty and the academic administration," Cindy Iten, her colleague, said.
The Ken Freedman Outstanding Advisor Awards are sponsored by the UK Advising Network and the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and are named in honor of Ken Freedman, who served as a professional advisor at UK for 15 years prior to his death in 2001. The award recognizes outstanding service in the field of academic advising.
"It is necessary to raise the importance of advising. The advising network strives to help students reach their full potential," University of Kentucky Provost Kumble Subbaswamy said.
Twenty-nine professional and faculty advisors have been recognized since the award's founding in 1994.
