Annual Events

Some events come and go. Others take on a life of their own. Here are the events that College of Arts and Sciences students and alumni have come to expect year after year.

Blazer Lecture & Homecoming Festivities

The Blazer Lecture Series was started in 1950 by Paul G. Blazer, founder of Ashland Oil, Inc., and his wife, Georgia Blazer, the first woman to serve on the UK Board of Trustees. It was their wish that the series enlighten the thinking and challenge the assumptions of faculty, students and the community. To ensure their vision became a reality, the College of Arts and Sciences has hosted more than 100 individuals as Blazer Lecturers including an American President, several Pulitzer Prize winners, a Nobel Laureate, two ambassadors and dozens of distinguished scholars, authors and researchers. This event is free and open to the public. Click here for more info. We are proud to announce that Manil Suri, author and mathematics professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County will be our 2009 Blazer Lecture guest. Suri's mathematical research is in the field of numerical analysis, but he also spends time devising ways to bring mathematics to the general public. Click here to read more about Dr. Suri.

Professor Francie Chassen-López has spent the last 15 years using historical research to increase the visibility of women and their role in nation building. Chassen-Lopez is currently writing the biography of Juana Catarina Romero (1837-1915) who was a major powerbroker in the city of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico. From an illiterate cigarette vendor, Romero became a Liberal spy, wealthy entrepreneur, “modernizing” political boss, and philanthropist. The study of her career illuminates the multiple ways in which women participated in the construction of the nation and a capitalist economy in Mexico.
