Good academic advising is important in helping to develop a course of study appropriate for your academic background and abilities, and is consistent with your educational and career goals. Faculty and professional advisors not only help to insure you take appropriate courses to satisfy degree requirements, but also serve as mentors and assist in developing the richest degree program possible.
- Actively participate in the advising process: come prepared, contribute to the discussions, and follow up when necessary.
- Schedule and keep advising appointments.
- Be knowledgeable about university and college policies, procedures, deadlines and requirements.
- Own and be familiar with the University of Kentucky Bulletin http://www.uky.edu/Registrar/Bulletin.htm
- Each semester secure a Schedule of Classes or visit the website (http://www.uky.edu/Registrar/schedule.htm) and review possible classes.
- Complete a trial schedule prior to meeting with the advisor.
- Know and fulfill University Studies Program (USP), college and major departmental requirements. All are listed in the University Bulletin.
- Be responsible for processing, completing and obtaining all necessary forms required for obtaining your degree; including applying for your degree by the established deadlines.
- Contact your advisor immediately with concerns about academic progress in a particular class or during the semester.
- Clarify personal values and educational goals and provide the advisor with accurate information regarding your interests and abilities.
- Accept responsibility for your own education.
- Honor and be prompt to scheduled advising appointments and show consideration for fellow students whose appointments precede and follow.
- Analyze and assess advice from faculty, advisors, and other mentors.
- Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.
- Seek answers from appropriate campus sources (see the resources page)
- Check UK e-mail regularly.
- Give advance notice for all canceled appointments.
