Advisor Responsibilities in Advising

Advising provides academic guidance and a way to further students’ intellectual, social, and physical development. The professional advisor views his/her role as a facilitator, providing needed information or resources so a student can make the best decisions for himself/herself.

The professional advisor:

  • Understands and effectively communicates the curriculum, graduation requirements, college policies, and procedures.
  • Assists students in developing decision making skills and developing skills in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements.
  • Demonstrates, explains, and clarifies the function of the degree audit program (APEX).
  • Works with students to assess academic performance and areas of strength to ensure they are consistent with their goals.
    Listens to students’ concerns and respects their individual values and choices.
  • Assists students in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on their lives and personal goals.
  • Answers students’ questions through scheduled meetings and email.
  • Refers students to college and campus resources, and services such as the A&S career counselor and/or the UK Counseling and Testing Center.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development and advising education.
