Advising provides academic guidance and a way to further students’ intellectual, social, and physical development. The professional advisor views his/her role as a facilitator, providing needed information or resources so a student can make the best decisions for himself/herself.
The professional advisor:
- Understands and effectively communicates the curriculum, graduation requirements, college policies, and procedures.
- Assists students in developing decision making skills and developing skills in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements.
- Demonstrates, explains, and clarifies the function of the degree audit program (APEX).
- Works with students to assess academic performance and areas of strength to ensure they are consistent with their goals.
Listens to students’ concerns and respects their individual values and choices.
- Assists students in understanding the purposes and goals of higher education and its effects on their lives and personal goals.
- Answers students’ questions through scheduled meetings and email.
- Refers students to college and campus resources, and services such as the A&S career counselor and/or the UK Counseling and Testing Center.
- Participates in ongoing professional development and advising education.
