With nearly 1,200 biology majors, the Department of Biology is home to the largest undergraduate major on campus. The department offers extensive opportunities for Independent Research, providing students with valuable research experience in many areas of biology. The bulk of all undergraduate research is done by students working one-on-one in the research laboratories of our faculty, who have funded research programs in a broad range of biological science.
Communicating with the Department of Biology
We communicate news, information, etc. to students in many ways: by letter, postings on the department bulletin boards, in class announcements, and electronically by internet or email. Students can communicate with the department in similar ways.
We strongly encourage all students to obtain e-mail accounts. University accounts can be obtained online; one excellent way to get started is to ask for help in one of the campus microlabs.
Once you get an e-mail account, subscribe to our electronic bulletin board, the BioMajor listserv. This listserv is run by Undergraduate Studies to send out a variety of announcements to biology majors: new course’s advising information, job and research opportunities, seminar announcements, etc. You can also send questions and replies to BioMajor and we will privately answer your question (this is a moderated listserv). BioMajor postings are also available on the BioMajor newsgroup at news.uky.edu.
