Current Projects

  • “Unequal Transitions: Women and Quality of Life in Egypt and India during Structural Adjustment.” This project examines how women fare following structural adjustment. It looks at how women’s outcomes vary in terms of religious affiliation, caste, socioeconomic status and other social indicators. It also examines the effects of pre- and post-structural adjustment state policies in this regard.
  • “Turning Indian Muslims into German Jews: Ethnicity, Class and the Rise of Hindu Nationalism in Central India.” This project analyzes the development of Hindu Nationalism in Central India, which prescribed the elimination of India’s Muslim population. It examines how new class distinctions, rooted in colonial policies, exacerbated latent perceptions of ethnic difference, prompting the development of dangerous, often violent anti-Muslim sentiment.

I am also currently working on a new project that compares and contrasts the economic survival strategies of Salvadoran and Mexican migrant women in South Central Los Angeles.
