Research
For the 2010/11 academic year I will be recruiting a graduate student for my research on substance use.
Administrative Director
Center for Drug Abuse Research Translation (CDART)
My primary research interests are concerned with childhood behavior problems, especially attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; i.e., hyperactivity) and conduct disorder (CD). My current primary research focus in this regard deals with story comprehension among children with ADHD. Dr. Betty Lorch and I recently completed 10 years of federal funding to explore the development of story comprehension abilities among children with ADHD.
A second focus of my current research concerns peer problems, especially teasing and peer victimization. Dr. Monica Kern and I have several studies in progress examining these issues.
My third line of current research is on the predictors of long-term drug use. I am currently Administrative Director of the university’s NIDA funded Drug Prevention Center. In addition, I am PI on a project in the Center examining the risk and protective factors for substance use among students during their first 3 years of college.
My fourth line of research is in collaboration with Dr. Fillmore, where we are funded to examine alcohol use/abuse and tolerance among adults with ADHD.
My clinical interests are in the area of the modification of disordered child behavior. My primary focus is on parent and teacher training in behavior management skills, and social skills groups among children.
I received the 2004 William Sturgill Award from the University of Kentucky for outstanding mentoring of graduate students, as well as recognition from Division 53 of APA for outstanding graduate student mentoring. Graduates from my lab have faculty positions in psychology at the University of Wyoming, the University of Kentucky,Argosy University, and Wofford College, and clinical or research positions at Duke University and Dartmouth Medical Center.
