The Lunar Eclipse

Background

The Lunar Eclipse of 20 February 2008 was a popular event in the Bluegrass.  For over three hours, a steady stream of students, faculty, and staff lined up at the telescope to view the Moon move through the earth's shadow. A time-lapse movie was made from the physics building.  Individual images are separated by 30 seconds of time, and 430 individual frames were used to create the video. The high resolution video is in DVD format, and requires a DVD player program or plugin. The musical quotation is from a Bach partita performed by Glenn Gould.

The entire sequence is combined into a single image.  The gaps in the path of the Moon are evidence of occasional cloud cover.
